Paparan TFT LCD 10.1 Inci
LCD terdiri daripada banyak piksel. Piksel terdiri daripada tiga sub-piksel (Merah / Hijau / Biru, RGB). Dalam kes resolusi Full-HD, yang banyak digunakan untuk telefon pintar, terdapat lebih dari enam juta (1,080 x 1,920 x 3 = 6,220,800) sub-piksel. Untuk mengaktifkan berjuta-juta sub-piksel ini, diperlukan TFT dalam setiap sub-piksel. TFT adalah singkatan untuk "Thin Film Transistor". TFT adalah sejenis peranti semikonduktor. Ia berfungsi sebagai injap kawalan untuk memberikan voltan yang sesuai ke kristal cair untuk sub-piksel individu. LCD TFT mempunyai lapisan kristal cair antara substrat kaca yang terbentuk dengan TFT dan elektrod piksel telus dan substrat kaca yang lain dengan penapis warna (RGB) dan elektrod kaunter telus. Di samping itu, polarisasi diletakkan di bahagian luar setiap substrat kaca dan sumber lampu latar di bahagian belakang. Perubahan voltan yang berlaku pada kristal cair mengubah transmisi panel termasuk dua plat polarisasi, dan dengan itu mengubah kuantiti cahaya yang berlalu dari lampu latar ke permukaan depan paparan. Prinsip ini membolehkan TFT LCD menghasilkan gambar berwarna.
